The film is Jacques Tourneur's masterpiece Out of the Past, made in 1947 and at last released on DVD by Warner along with four other classic noirs. This has to be my favorite Miss Silver to date. The documentary Out of the Past recovers facets of our history that have been left out of the textbooks and follows one young woman making history today. Chock-full of such lines, Out of the Pastis a perfect example of fatalism, the idea that death is inevitable and that all one can hope for is to delay it as long as possible.
